If you want to start playing chess you must first setup a chess board properly. Or if you want to learn a new game of chess then it is very important that you learn how to setup a chess board correctly.
You can set up a chess board correctly by following these 7 steps:
1.Position the Board:
Begin by positioning the chessboard with the light square in the bottom-right corner. This orientation ensures both sides are aligned properly. A simple rule to remember is: white on the right.
Place the board between the two players, seated across from each other. If the board includes printed letters and numbers, the letters (representing files, or vertical columns) should face each player, while the numbers (representing ranks, or horizontal rows) run from bottom to top.
One player will use the white pieces, and the other will use the black pieces. Each player arranges their pieces on their respective side of the board.
2.Place the Rooks:
Place your rooks in the corners of the board, just like the towers of a castle. This is an easy way to remember their position.
3.Place the Knights:
Imagine that you are putting some smelly horses on the board and you want them far away from the king and queen.
4.Place the Bishops:
Place the bishops next to the knights. They stand between the smelly knights and the royal king and queen, creating a proper arrangement.
5.Place the Queens:
Place the White queen on the white square remaining in the back row.
Place the Black queen on the black square remaining in the back row.
6.Place the Kings:
Place the White king on the remaining square in the back row.
Place the Black king on the remaining square in the back row.
7.Place the pawns on the second rank.
Starting with your pawns clears the pile of pieces next to the board, making it easier and faster to set up the rest of your pieces.
Always remember White moves first:
Remember, White always moves first. The player with the white pieces makes the opening move. To decide who plays White and who plays Black, you can use any random method. A fun option is to hide a white pawn in one hand behind your back and let your opponent pick a hand.
